What is Toshakhana case?

A non-bailable warrant has been issued against 70-year-old Imran Khan for concealing his assets in his declarations. He is also accused of selling the gifts kept in the Toshakhana (treasury where gifts given to government officials from foreign countries are kept). This is called the Toshakhana case.

Imran is accused of earning $36 million by selling three watches gifted to him. He allegedly did not deposit some gifts in the treasury in violation of the rule. As a Prime Minister in Pakistan, he is allowed to keep gifts only after paying a certain amount.

The Islamabad High Court had last week suspended till March 13 the arrest warrant issued by the district and sessions court against the PTI chairman.

Imran did not appear in the court

Significantly, former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan did not appear in a court in Islamabad for the fourth time on Tuesday in the Toshakhana case. At the same time, the court refused to quash the arrest warrant issued against him.

Former prime minister’s lawyer Sher Afzal Marwat appeared in the court and said that 70-year-old Khan was unwell after the Wazirabad attack and was unable to come.

Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party on Monday challenged in the Islamabad High Court the arrest warrant issued against Khan for non-appearance in the Islamabad District and Sessions Court.

Marwat requested the court to give a date next week for hearing in the case and said that Khan would give ‘power of attorney’ in a day or two.

Khan took to Twitter on Tuesday to slam Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government and said it was behind the total 76 legal cases filed against him so far.

He tweeted, “This is what happens when a group of criminals is imposed on a country by people devoid of intelligence, morals and ethics.” Appearing in court will be easy.
