Fast story of Varuthini Ekadashi
A long time ago there was a kingdom on the banks of river Narmada, over which a king named Mandhata used to rule. The king was very pious. He was widely known for his charity. He was also an ascetic and worshiper of Lord Vishnu.
Once the king went to the forest for penance and started his penance by placing his posture under a huge tree. He was still absorbed in austerity that a wild bear attacked him and chewed his leg. But the king Mandhata remained engrossed in austerity.
When the bear started dragging them, the king started getting nervous, but he did not get angry while following the ascetic religion and requested Lord Vishnu to overcome this crisis.
Lord Vishnu appeared and killed the bear with his Sudarshan Chakra. But by then the bear had almost chewed the king’s leg. Raja was in a lot of pain. Then Lord Vishnu said, ‘Watts! No need to get distracted. To worship my Varaha form on Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Vaishakh month. With the brilliance of the fast, you will again become strong with full limbs. Whatever the bear has done to you, it is the fruit of your past life’s sin. By observing this Ekadashi, you will also get freedom from all sins.
By obeying Bhagwan, King Mandhata did the same and after observing the fast, he was given a new life. He became strong again. Now the king began to indulge in Bhagavad bhakti with even more reverence.
