A surprising news has come out from Texas, America. A woman had gone missing here 51 years ago as a child. But now she has reunited with her family again. According to a report in The Guardian, on August 23, 1971, Melissa Highsmith was abducted from Fort Worth, Texas.
Her mother, Alta Apantenko, posted an advertisement in a newspaper for a babysitter. He hired a woman without meeting her because someone needed to watch her daughter while she was working because she was raising a young child by herself. Apateenko’s roommate gave Melissa to a babysitter, who allegedly kidnapped her and disappeared with her.
In September of this year, Highsmith’s relatives received a notification that he was near Charleston, more than 1,100 miles from Fort Worth. DNA test results, Melissa’s birthmark and her birthday all helped the family prove that Melissa was the child who was kidnapped from them 51 years ago.
Melissa was joined by her mother, father and four of her siblings at a ceremony at the family’s church in Fort Worth on Saturday, according to a statement from the group obtained by The Guardian. According to Melissa’s sister, Sharon Highsmith, her family contacted Lisa Jo Schiele, a clinical laboratory scientist and amateur genealogist, for assistance in finding important DNA and publicly available information to locate Melissa.
Sharon Highsmith said, “Our family is suffering at the hands of agencies that have mismanaged this case.” For now, we just want to get to know Melissa, welcome her into the family and make up for 50 years of lost time,” she told The Guardian.
