As of local time, the football match between Arema Football Club and Persebaya Surabaya started at 8 pm on Saturday. The match was being played at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in the East Java region of Indonesia. Police say that around 42 thousand spectators were present in the stadium during the match. All these spectators were fans of Arema Football Club. The organizers had barred Persebaya Surabaya’s fans from coming, as they wanted to avoid any kind of disturbance.

It was the first time in two decades that Arema Football Club had lost to Persebaya Surabaya. In such a situation, the fans of Arema were disappointed with Persebaya’s victory.

3. How did the stampede happen?
Arema’s fans came on the field as soon as the referee blew the final whistle for victory. Fans started throwing bottles and other items at players and football officials. The police had to intervene to handle the matter. East Java Police Chief Nico Efinta said, ‘The situation was out of control. Fans started attacking the officers. They also damaged cars.

When violence broke out, the police fired tear gas shells to control the situation. After this the fans panicked and started running towards the exit gate. This caused a stampede and people started suffocating.

FIFA has banned the use of teargas in football stadiums. Those who fainted, picked up other fans and started trying to come out. The police chief said that during the stampede, the incident happened at gate number 10. After which there was a clash between the police and the fans outside the stadium. Five police cars were torched and damaged.

34 people died on the spot due to suffocation when a stampede broke out while running towards the exit gate. The rest were taken to the hospital. Some died on the way and some died after reaching the hospital. The death toll till 9:30 am was 158 which rose to 174 by 10:30 am. Police say that this number may increase as many people are still in critical condition in the hospital.

6. The President ordered an inquiry into the matter
Indonesian President Joko Widodo expressed regret over the incident and ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. Widodo said, ‘I hope this tragedy will be the last tragedy of a football match in Indonesia.’ FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on this matter, ‘It is a dark day for everyone associated with football and this incident is incomprehensible.’

7. Post-Event Actions
On Sunday morning, President Widodo ordered the Football Association to suspend all BRI League 1 matches until the investigation on security during the match is over. BRI League 1 is one of the top football leagues in Indonesia.

Before President Widodo’s announcement, the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) apologized to the families of the victims and announced suspension of all league matches for a week. Also, Arema Football Club has been banned from hosting home matches for the remainder of the season.

World football governing body FIFA has clearly written in its safety regulations that the police cannot use any firearms or teargas attached to the stadium or keep them with them in the stadium.

10. Why does violence happen during football matches in Indonesia?
Football is very popular in Indonesia. There is a lot of craze here especially with the domestic football league. Fans are emotional about their clubs. Sometimes this bigotry takes the form of violence. Usually these clashes between fans take place outside the stadium.

Not only this, the credibility of Indonesian fans at the international level is not very good. Fans of arch rivals Malaysia and Indonesia clashed during the 2019 FIFA World Cup qualifying match. In September of the same year, Malaysian fans were stoned and threatened during the qualifiers in Jakarta. The Sports Minister of Malaysia was also present there. Due to the violence, he was immediately evicted from the stadium safely. Two months after this incident, fans threw bottles at each other during a match in Kuala Lumpur.
