Former veteran cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed anger over Mumbai cricketer Sarfaraz Khan not being selected in Team India. He lashed out at Chetan Sharma’s selection committee and said that if you want a slim-trim cricketer in the team, then go to the fashion show and bring it from there. Sarfaraz is perfectly fit for him. If he was unfit, he would not have been able to score a triple century.
Why selection by looking at the body?
Sarfaraz was not selected in the Indian Test team against Australia. Things came to light in the media reports that Sarfaraz was sidelined due to fitness. At the same time, in the absence of Rishabh Pant, attacking batsmen like Suryakumar Yadav and Ishaan Kishan were selected in the team.
Gavaskar said on this, the selection of a player should not be done by looking at his body or stature. If a player is scoring 900 runs at an average of more than 100 in 3 consecutive Ranji seasons, then he cannot be unfit. Sarfaraz is the perfect fit for me. He must be in Team India’s squad against Australia.
How can an unfit cricketer score a triple century?
In an interview, Gavaskar said, ‘If the player is unfit then he will not be able to complete the century at the end of the day. Sarfaraz has already scored a triple century. The BCCI has made the yo-yo test a measure of fitness. Sarfaraz comes to fielding even after scoring a century. He proves how fit he is for cricket.
‘Hand over the bat and ball to the model’
Gavaskar did not stop here, he further said that if the BCCI selection committee wanted slim and trim boys only. Then they should go to the fashion show and select some models and feed them cricket by handing them a bat-ball. He should also be included in the team. You have cricketers of all shapes and sizes, don’t go by that. Do team selection on the ability to score runs and take wickets.
