Legendary women’s boxer MC Mary Kom and men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh will be India’s flag bearers at the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) took this decision on Monday. The decision has been communicated to the organizers of the Tokyo Olympics. At the same time, Bajrang Punia has been given the responsibility of being the flag bearer in the closing ceremony. The Tokyo Olympics starts on 8 August.
first two flag bearers
IOA chief Narinder Batra said that two flag bearers from India will enter the Olympics. Earlier, in all the Olympics, India had flown only one flag bearer. Abhinav Bindra, the country’s only gold medalist in the individual event of the Olympics, was the flag bearer of India in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
IOC gave instructions to all countries
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) instructed all 206 member states to land two flag bearers in Tokyo. It was mandatory to have one woman and one man. Keeping this instruction in mind, the Indian Olympic Association has decided to choose two flag bearers.
Mary Kom is a 6-time world champion
MC Mary Kom, who was chosen as the flag bearer for the Tokyo Olympics, has won the gold medal in the World Championship 6 times. She is also a bronze medalist of the London Olympics (2012). On the other hand, the Indian men’s hockey team has won the gold medal in the Olympics 8 times. Keeping this in mind, the captain of the men’s hockey team has also been made the flag bearer.
