It is the 1940s. In California, 2 brothers, Rick and Mac Macdonald, opened a small restaurant. Its specialty was that there were only 2-4 items of food in the menu here. Because of this, the test and quality of food was always the same, the order time was also less. People liked this thing and their business slowly started gaining momentum. When orders started coming in more, the two brothers also bought some machines for their timely delivery. These also included milk shake-making mixers.
Here the entry is of the ray cross. Ray Kraas had spent 25 years of his life doing different things. For example, playing piano, driving and selling mixers as salesmen. Ray Cross noticed that the same restaurant in California bought 6 mixers from him. Ray thought, why not go and see what these people are doing with such a mixer. Ray came to California to see that restaurant. Here he saw that the restaurant is small, but there is a line of eaters.
Ray asked a man in line that there are more restaurants in California, yet why is it so crowded here? The answer from the front was that here you will get a good burger for 15 cents, that too in a short time. Ray got stuck. He talks to Rick and Make to take over the franchise of the restaurant. The deal was struck and Ray got the franchise.
On April 15, 1955, today, Ray opened MacDonald’s first branch. You know what happened after that. Today the company has more than 36 thousand outlets in more than 100 countries. Every day around 5 crore people order food from here. This earns the restaurant more than 5 billion rupees. The company’s revenue in 2020 was 19.21 billion dollars, about 144 thousand crores in Indian rupees.
Ups and downs in India
In 1996, Macdonald entered the Indian market. There were more challenges here. Prior to this, Macdonald had never started a business in a country where vegetarianism was preferred. Beef and pork from Macdonald outside India was also included in the menu, but it was a matter of faith here, so it was decided that beef and pork would not be in the menu.
The company chose 2 partners here – Vikram Bakshi and Amit Jatia. Bakshi was given the responsibility of handling restaurants in North-East India and Jatia from South-West India. But it was not so easy. Both these partners had an agreement of 25 years, but the company had a dispute with Vikram Bakshi before that. The matter reached the court-court and was finally settled in 2019. The company incurred losses due to the dispute. Many restaurants closed. The company incurred a loss of about Rs 421 crore from 1996 to 2019. The company currently has more than 500 restaurants in India.
