New Delhi:

Thousands of farmers gathered in the ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ being organized at Ramlila Maidan here on Monday to press for the statutory guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP). The farmers, who were seen wearing turbans of different colours, requested the government to fulfill its ‘written promises’ which were made in December 2021. The Morcha had led the agitation for more than a year on the borders of Delhi against the agricultural laws of the central government, which have now been withdrawn.

The farmers’ demands include legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP), withdrawal of cases registered against farmers, compensation, pension, loan waiver and electricity bill waiver to the families of farmers killed during the protest. National President of ‘Jai Kisan Andolan’ Avik Saha said that despite the written assurance, the central government has failed to fulfill the demands of the farmers. He said, “Thousands of cases are pending against the farmers. More than 750 farmers lost their lives during the agitation and their families have not received compensation. Apart from this, there are many other demands which have not been fulfilled.

Majinder Shah, a member of farmers’ group who reached Delhi from Bihar’s Vaishali district, claimed that farmers across the country are living in pathetic conditions. The rich are getting richer, while the farmers who provide food for all have nothing to eat, he said. Only five percent of Indians own most of the country’s wealth. On the other hand, farmers have to sell their land to meet the expenses of their children’s weddings.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened here in view of the Kisan Mahapanchayat. Delhi Police has deployed over 2,000 security personnel at the venue. Police had said on Sunday that elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure that the event goes smoothly. He said that police personnel have been deployed for crowd management and it will be ensured that no unauthorized person enters the venue and law and order is followed.

The traffic police officer said that general public and motorists have been advised to avoid traveling on the route around Ramlila Maidan, especially on Delhi Gate to JLN road via Ajmeri Gate Chowk. In a statement released on Sunday, the United Kisan Morcha, a joint platform of the farmers’ union, said, “The Kisan Mahapanchayat is being organized with the aim of pressurizing the statutory guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP).”

It has been said in the statement that lakhs of farmers from different states and union territories are coming to Delhi to participate in the programme.
