A bright ‘hot spot’ has been found near the Sagittarius A* black hole in the middle of our Milky Way Galaxy. Its speed is 30% faster than the speed of light and it is constantly circling the black hole. Scientists say that the hot spot could be a bubble of hot gas.

First of all, what is a black hole?

A black hole is a celestial object whose gravity is so strong that nothing, including light, can escape its pull. Objects can fall in it, but nothing can come out. It also absorbs the light falling on it. Black holes are formed when stars release their nuclear fuel or they die.

Parikrama being completed in 70 minutes

Astronomer Maciek Vilgas at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Germany says that the hot spot makes one round of Sagittarius A* in just 70 minutes. This is because of the speed faster than light. Also, the size of its orbit is equal to that of the planet Mercury.

In the picture of Sagittarius A*, a black hole can be seen in the middle, around which is a ring of light.

Discovered by ALMA Telescope

Vilgas and his team used the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimetre Array (ALMA) telescope to find the hot spot. For this, 66 radio antennas are spread in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. This event is a part of the Horizon Telescope project. This international project was launched to take pictures of black holes present in space.

The picture of Sagittarius A* was released 4 months ago

Scientists first released the picture of Sagittarius A* black hole 4 months ago. It is 4 million times the mass of the Sun and is 9.5 trillion kilometers from Earth. This is the second picture released of a black hole. Earlier in April 2019, a photo of the M87 Galaxy’s black hole was revealed.
