Graham Reid, former coach of the men’s hockey team.
Indian men’s hockey team head coach Graham Reid has left his post. He took this step after India’s poor performance in the Hockey World Cup in the past. This time the World Cup was held in India only and Team India was eliminated after losing to New Zealand. Along with Reid, 58, some members of the support staff also resigned.
‘This is the right time to quit’
Resigning as coach, Graham Reid said, ‘It is the right time to step down and hand over the job to the new management. It has been a proud moment for me to work with Hockey India. I enjoyed all the moments while working with Team India.
Among the support staff, analytics coach Greg Clark and scientific advisor Mitchell David Pemberton have also resigned. All will be on notice period in January and will be removed from their post after getting permission from Hockey India.
How correct is the decision?
India could not enter the World Cup quarter-finals and had to be content with being at number 9. But, India has to play Asian Games only after 6 months and Paris Olympics in 2024. In such a situation, how far his decision to leave the post is right, only time will tell.
India won Olympic bronze
Graham Reid’s coaching career did not have a happy ending. But, he has won the Olympic bronze medal in his coaching to Team India. The team also won the silver medal in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games under his coaching. Team India was defeated by Australia in the final.
Coach Graham Reid and other support staff with Team India that won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
2 bad matches in this world cup
Hosts India were drawn in Pool D along with England, Spain and Wales in the 15th Hockey World Cup. India beat Spain and drew with England. But, the team got 2 goals against Wales playing the World Cup for the first time. India won the match by a margin of 4-2, but after finishing second in Pool D, the team had to play a crossover match.
Had India won against Wales by a big margin, they would have finished on number one and could have reached the quarter-finals as well. Team India faced New Zealand in the crossover. Where New Zealand beat us in the penalty shoot-out and knocked us out of the race to become champions.
9th place team
After losing the crossover, India played matches to become the 9th to 16th ranked team. The first match we beat Japan 8-0 and the second against South Africa 5-2. After winning both the matches, India were joint 9th with Argentina. to read full news click here…
