The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a PIL seeking direction to the Central Government to declare Ram Sethu as a national heritage. This application has been filed in the Supreme Court by former BJP MP Subramanian Swamy. Swamy had said that the government has not yet taken any decision on this issue. She has been avoiding it for 9 years.

SC had said in January – will listen after three months
A bench of CJI DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala said that we will hear it soon. Earlier on January 19, the government had said in an affidavit to the Supreme Court that the Ministry of Culture is working on the process of declaring Ram Sethu as a national heritage.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh said in the Rajya Sabha on December 22 last year that Indian satellites have not found any evidence related to the origin of Ramsetu. Jitendra had said – Indian satellites have taken high resolution pictures of Ramsetu. However, no solid evidence has been found from them.

In 2005, Manmohan Sarkar announced a major shipping canal project named Sethusamudram. There was also talk of deepening the Ramsetu by taking out sand from some areas.

Know what is Ramsetu, which is being demanded to be made a national monument

  • There is a chain of shallow limestone rocks between Rameswaram in India and Mannar Island in Sri Lanka. It is known as Ramsetu in India and Adam’s Bridge (Adam’s Bridge) worldwide.
  • The length of this bridge is about 30 miles (48 km). This bridge separates the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait from each other. The sea is very shallow in this area. Due to which there is a lot of difficulty in running big boats and ships here.
  • It is said that till the 15th century, one could walk on this structure from Rameswaram to Mannar Island, but the storms deepened the sea here, after which this bridge was submerged in the sea.
  • In 1993, NASA released satellite pictures of this Ramsetu, in which it was described as a man-made bridge.
