Sattu … must have heard the name. It is most famous in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, it is also eaten and drank. It can also be called Bihari fast food, such fast food, which does not have any side effects. A variety of delicious dishes are also made from Sattu, from Litti-Chokha to Sattu Parathe, now people all over the country like to eat. There is also a folk festival in Bihar in its name, which is celebrated in the month of April, the name is Satuan. In this story, we are referring to Sattu, because the goal of life of the person we are going to talk about in today’s Khudar story is to bring Sattu to the world.
Sachin Kumar, who lives in Madhubani district of Bihar, has quit his scheduled job in Mumbai and started a startup, named Sattuj, by returning to his village to make Bihar’s famous Sattu a world famous. Through this, Sachin is processing different types of products, including sattu powder, readymade energy drinks and litti-chokha readymade spices.
Sachin says’ We had finalized everything from packaging to packaging from our vendor and we had requested from them that Satuan festival is celebrated on 14 April and eating and drinking sattu is very important on this day. So if we have the first stock, then I want to give the first packet to my parents. ‘
Sachin also took training in food processing for the correct processing of Sattu, so that everything in his products was in the right quantity.
Sachin says that Paulo Coelho wrote in his book The Alchemist that ‘And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.’ And the Hindi version of this is what we heard in Shah Rukh Khan’s film that ‘If you want something with a strong heart, then the whole work takes you to meet him’. So something similar happened to me, luckily, on 14 April 2018, we got our first packet. Then on the same day we started our brand Sattuj under our company Go Rural Food Beverages.
Sachin left Mumbai job and came to village and started pilot study on Sattu
Sachin says about the journey of Sattuj, ‘I studied Entrepreneurship during MBA. My family had a retail business. During that time I felt that in the business that we are doing, we bring goods from outside and sell them in Bihar, but we are not selling any goods from Bihar outside Bihar. It was in my mind from the days of my studies that we should do something that brought the name of Bihar to outside countries, but it was not so easy to do all this.
After completing MBA, Sachin got a good job in Mumbai. After a few years, I also got an opportunity to go to America, but he did not feel like in job, he wanted to do something on his own land in Bihar. In 2008, Sachin quit his job and returned home. Nobody at home was happy with Sachin’s decision. During this time, he always kept trying to find something around him, through which he could create a separate identity of Bihar. His search ended by going to Sattu.
Sachin says this ready mix drink is gluten free, vegan and preservative free. It is also a good and healthy option for carbonated drinks.
From 2016, Sachin started a pilot study on Sattu. He traveled to different cities and understood how much people knew about Sattu. Sachin says, ‘During this time a lot of shocking information came in front of us. If no one knew how to make sattu, then no one had enough time to make sattu by gathering all the things. Then we decided that we would launch Sattu as a ready-to-make drink in the market. We prepared a small drink pack which can be easily carried along while traveling. ‘
The Sattu was found boring by the Young Generation, so made its packaging different
Sachin also took training in food processing for the correct processing of Sattu, so that everything in his products was in the right quantity. Then he got the product ready and also took FSSAI certification. Sachin says, ‘Along with giving Sattu a new look, we also made its packaging different. Because the new generation found Sattu to be very boring, we packaged our product like the rest of the drinks.
For this startup of Sachin, he has received loan from IIM Kolkata and funding from Indian Angel Network (IAN) and Bihar Industry Association (BIA).
Initially, Sachin introduced three flavors of Sattu to the market, including water-cumin, sweet and chocolate flavors. It was priced at Rs 20 to Rs 120, packing was done in sachets and cans. A glass of paper and a spoon were also given along with it. That is, the customer just has to mix and drink the powder and water in the glass. Sachin says this ready mix drink is gluten free, vegan and preservative free. It is also a good and healthy option for carbonated drinks.
First startup of Sattuj Bihar which has received funding from IAN and BIA
For this startup of Sachin, he has received loan from IIM Kolkata and funding from Indian Angel Network (IAN) and Bihar Industry Association (BIA). Sattuj is the first startup in Bihar to receive funding from both these networks.
Sachin says, ‘I met Hari Balasubramaniam, the biggest investor of Indian Angel Network, at an event. I offered a glass of sattu to Hari sir there. Within 5 minutes they committed to us that they will fund our startup. I never thought that without any business proposal, PPT, slides, just by seeing the product, you will get the commitment and that too by sattu. He also immediately called BIA, after which the Bihar Industry Association also decided why not invest in Bihar’s startup.
Today 10 people work in Sachin’s company. They are delivering their products across the country through online platforms and their websites. Sachin has written Made in Bihar on each of his products. Sachin’s company had revenue of Rs 10 lakh in the last financial year. At the same time, despite the lockdown this year, his company has crossed this figure only in November.
