Thiruvananthapuram MP Tharoor addressed the ‘Symbiosis International University Literary Festival’ through video conference. He said that a large number of people, including some social workers, have been detained only for their statements. He said, ‘When I was in school, I learned that the pen is more powerful than the sword. Today, I have seen our country, its politics and its discourse. Now I do not agree with it. The Congress leader said that he is sad to say that the expression and thought may have lost their strength. For some time, power and authority can crush words.
The Congress MP said, ‘We have seen that a large number of people are in custody for their expression. Currently people like Varvara Rao, Vernon Gonzalvis, Sudha Bhardwaj and Anand Teltumbde are examples of this. None of them is accused of throwing stones, killing anyone or possessing a gun or anything like that. This is only about his statements. If the pen is erased for the authority of the government, then how will the pen be raised equal to the sword.
Significantly, on January 1, 2018, Rao, Gonzalvis, Bhardwaj, Teltumbde and some other activists have been arrested for their alleged involvement in inciting the mob to violence in Koregaon Bhima near Pune and for alleged contact with the Maoists.
