6 lakh doses of monkeypox were given in the US
According to the New York Times, 6 lakh doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine for monkeypox and smallpox have been delivered in the US as of mid-July, but this number is low given the risk to a population of about 1.6 million people. It works on identifying the epidemic at the global, national and local level and working on its solution.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared monkeypox as an international public health emergency. According to the WHO, monkeypox is an infection spread from animals to humans and its symptoms are similar to smallpox.
9 cases of monkeypox in India so far
Two new cases of monkeypox were reported in Delhi AIIMS on Thursday. Both have been admitted to LNJP Hospital in the capital. Both the patients also do not have any travel history. After getting the new cases, there have been a total of 9 positive cases of monkeypox in the country. Of these, 5 are from Kerala and the rest are from Delhi.
According to Dr. Lalit Dar, Professor in the Department of Microbiology, 15 labs are registered with ICMR for testing monkeypox across the country. He said that RTPCR is also done for monkeypox. We have the capacity to take 400 samples a day depending on the need and the number of patients. At present, samples are coming from Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana for testing.
