NASA is about to send astronauts to the moon after 50 years. Under the Artemis-2 mission, next year four astronauts will come back to Earth after circling around the moon. This crew will also include a woman and an African-American (black) astronaut for the first time. More than 50 years after the Apollo mission, a man would walk to the moon.
Christina Hammock Koch has been selected as the expert for this 10-day Moon mission. Earlier, Christina has made a record of living in space for the longest time. Apart from him, Victor Glover of the American Navy has also been selected as a pilot. He will be the first black astronaut to go to space on the Moon mission.
Astronauts selected for NASA’s Artemis-2 mission
Astronauts will land on the moon in 2025
Three of the four astronauts selected for the mission are from the US while one is Canadian. These names were announced from the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Astronauts will not step on the moon during the Moon mission. This is a flyby mission under which astronauts will come back only after circling the moon. However, if this mission is successful, Artemis-3 mission will be sent in 2025, in which astronauts will set foot on the moon.

22 lakh kilometer travel target
Artemis-2 will travel about 2.2 million kilometers during the mission. Its purpose is to check that all life-support systems of the Orion spaceship are properly designed. So that astronauts do not have trouble going into deep space and during moon landing in 2025. Artemis II will fly some 10,300 kilometers from the far side of the Moon before returning.
NASA’s Artemis-1 mission returned to Earth in December last year after traveling for 25 days.
NASA launched the Artemis-1 mission on November 15, 2022, in the third attempt. It returned to Earth on December 10 after completing a journey of 1.4 million miles after 25 days. Earlier in December 1972, the Apollo-17 mission had reached so close to the moon.
World’s most powerful rocket SLS made for Orion space capsule
NASA sent the Apollo mission to the Moon in 1972. After 50 years, the Moon Mission is being launched. This time NASA has built the world’s most powerful rocket SLS to take the spacecraft Orion into space. All the information about this rocket and spacecraft Orion can be seen and read in the graphic below…
What is Artemis mission?
Artemis-1 took the picture on the 13th day of the mission by staying 4 lakh 32 thousand kilometers away from the Earth.
Artemis mission cost Rs 7,434 billion
According to an audit by the NASA Office of the Inspector General, from 2012 to 2025, the project will cost $93 billion, ie 7,434 billion rupees. At the same time, each flight will cost 4.1 billion dollars, ie 327 billion rupees. So far 37 billion dollars, i.e. 2,949 billion rupees have been spent on this project.
Artemis is different from the 50-year-old Apollo mission
The last and 17th flight of the Apollo mission took off in 1972. The mission was conceived by former US President JFK to defeat the Soviet Union. His goal was to establish America in the first place in the world in the field of science and technology. However, after almost 50 years the atmosphere is different.
Now America does not want to beat Russia or China through Artemis mission. The purpose of NASA is to thoroughly explore the things located outside the Earth. Going to the moon, scientists want to try to make fuel, food and buildings from the ice and soil there.
