New Delhi:

The petitions challenging the constitutional validity of demonetisation will be heard in the Supreme Court on Wednesday. The matter will be heard by the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court. The Constitution Bench will hear all the petitions against the Central Government’s decision of demonetisation.

The first case in the new Constitution Bench constituted in the Supreme Court has come to challenge the order of demonetisation. The petition in this regard was filed in 2016 itself. At that time, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government had stopped the then prevalent five hundred and thousand rupees. Then Vivek Narayan Sharma challenged this move of the government by filing a petition. After this petition 57 more petitions were filed. Now all these will be heard together.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an announcement on November 8, 2016, while addressing the entire nation at 8 pm, and the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes that were in circulation in the country till that time were canceled from 12 noon on the same night. After this, a new series note of Rs 500 was issued, but no note of Rs 1,000 is now prevalent in India. In its place, the Reserve Bank of India issued a new series note of Rs 2,000.

A new Constitution Bench has been constituted in the Supreme Court. The first case in front of which is to challenge the order of demonetisation. This is the fourth Constitution Bench in this week. Chief Justice UU Lalit has constituted another Constitution Bench. It will be headed by Justice S Abdul Nazeer. The other judges in this constitution bench will be Justice BR Gavai, Justice AS Bopanna, Justice V Rama Subramaniam and Justice BV Nagarathna. Five important issues will also be taken up for consideration before this Constitution Bench.
