Sales of luxury products in the country are creating new records. Market data shows that the sales of luxury cars increased by 50% in one year. Expensive smartphones, big TV-fridges all had 55-95% more sales. The market for Swiss watches also doubled. In contrast, the rate of growth in sales of essential items like toothpaste, hair oil, soap was very low or negative. Cheap mobiles used in low income group were sold less. Sales of two-wheelers also did not increase.

The organizations working on savings and expenditure have told the shocking reality. According to him, the impact of Kovid-19 and the lockdown did not affect the top 20% income group much. That’s why he started buying luxury products as soon as the market opened, but the lower 20% section has not yet recovered. He is also buying essential items after thinking. It may take another year for him to recover from the shock. Also, this pace of sale of luxury products may not be sustained.

The expenses of the rich increased because

  • According to data from car companies, luxury car sales are set to increase by 50% to 37,000 units in 2022.
  • The cost of 10 thousand cars was more than 1 crore. Mercedes Benz sold the maximum 6,500 cars.
  • According to the International Data Corporation, the sale of expensive mobiles above 41 thousand increased by 55% in 2022 as compared to 2021.
  • According to the Federation of Swiss Watch Industry, the sales of Lifestyle Swiss Watches will be Rs 1640 crore in 2022. It was Rs 843 crore in 2020.
  • According to GfK Market Intelligence, sales of Ultra HD TVs larger than 55 inches grew by 95% in 2021.

Empty pockets of low income earners

  • According to retail intelligence firm Bizom, sales of FMCG products such as toothpaste, noodles and hair oil in small towns were down 0.2% in the December-22 quarter. This sales grew by 4% in big cities. The rural and semi-urban market declined by 0.8% in six months.
  • According to SIAM figures, 13,40,989 two-wheelers were sold in the country in January-20. 13,18,182 vehicles were sold in Jan-23. That is, the sales of two-wheelers did not increase in three years. During this period, the increase in sales of passenger cars was just 23%.
  • There was a 15% decrease in the sale of smartphones priced below Rs 25,000.

Lifestyle product sales may decline
Rajendra Shukla, MD & CEO, Price New Delhi, said that it would take another year for the lowest income group to recover from this situation. Also, the sales of lifestyle products will not be the same next year. There may also be a decrease in this.
