AB de Villiers, one of South Africa’s greatest batsmen, said that due to the tight schedule of cricket, it is becoming difficult for players to play all three formats. It has become like a punishment for them. A player can play all the three formats only if he takes a break in between.
De Villiers took retirement to spend time with family
AB de Villiers retired from International Cricket in 2018. After this, he said goodbye to all formats of cricket in 2021. He quit cricket to spend more time with his family.
AB de Villiers played his last match against KKR on 11 October.
Players have to choose their format
In an interview to PTI, de Villiers further said that players’ careers can be extended if they choose their formats. Along with this, the board should talk to the players about this so that the balance is maintained. The board should pick the players, talk to them. By listening to the players and understanding their goals, it is necessary to find out where the players fit. He should be asked whether he wants to spend more time in the league or in international cricket.
It is also necessary to play in the league
De Villiers further said that it is also necessary to play in leagues around the world. This gives experience. Players like Suryakumar Yadav, me and Devald Brewis have been able to take cricket to a different level because of the league. It is very important to discuss with the player whether he wants to score goals or not. Many players are weak in one format and they know about it, yet they can’t talk about it. Discussion is necessary at this time.
Even during my career, I could not talk to the board, nor did the board ever talk to me. Because of this, we could not make any plan so that I could play more cricket.
