India has been continuously demanding permanent membership in the Security Council in view of its population and its role in international affairs. The current permanent members of the Security Council are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Korosi was addressing diplomats, strategic affairs experts and academicians at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA). He also expressed surprise as to why there is no consensus yet on any proposal to take the reform process forward.
He said, “Is there any time limit for this? No, I don’t think there is any time limit…” He said, ‘Why can’t the member countries of the body do this? Because interests are too divided and for some it is better to be in an inactive state than to initiate reform.’ Hungarian diplomat Korosi is currently the President of the 77th United Nations General Assembly. He appreciated India’s call for peace in Ukraine and humanitarian assistance to those affected by the conflict during the recent membership of the UN Security Council.
