Indian women’s hockey team will play Olympics for the third time in history this year. The team is being commanded by Rani Rampal. The Indian women’s team played the Olympics for the first time in 1980. Then the team was at number four in the Moscow Games. After 36 years, the team got a chance in the 2016 Rio Olympics. This time the team was eliminated from the group stage itself. The team was then at number six. However, now under the captaincy of Rani, the team has every hope of winning a medal in the Tokyo Olympics.

Under Rani’s captaincy, the team made significant achievements over the years. During this time the team has won Gold in Asia Cup 2017, Silver in Asian Games 2018, Silver in Asian Champions Trophy 2018 and FIH Series Final 2019.

Most of the players of the women’s team were infected in the Corona epidemic, who are now fully prepared to recover. Captain Rani Rampal said that the players who had corona have returned after recovering. Everyone is ready to get the country the first medal in the Olympics. Actually, the women’s hockey team could not win any Olympic medal so far. Men’s team has won 8 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze. Dainik NewsBust India spoke to Rani about the preparations for the Olympics and the Indian team.

  • How confident are you about the medal at the Tokyo Olympics, what will be the team’s strategy?

For the first time we have qualified for the second consecutive Olympics. The team’s performance has steadily improved over the years. In such a situation, I have full hope that we will definitely win the medal. The Olympics is a very big tournament. In such a situation, our strategy will be different according to every match. Will go into league matches with a different strategy. Whereas after reaching the quarterfinals, the team’s strategy will be changed according to the situation.

  • This time there are a lot of expectations from the women’s team, will there be mental pressure on the team regarding this?

When you go to play in such a big tournament, there is bound to be some mental pressure somewhere. We have also focused on mental health to reduce mental pressure, so that we maintain balance in every situation.

  • You and some players were corona infected, what were the challenges faced during this?

Due to Corona, all the players could start training together only after about a month, because all the players were not infected together. Some had happened earlier. Some happened later. At the same time, a session is also very important for the player. While we stayed away from training for about 1 month. It definitely made a difference to the training of the team somewhere. Had to stay quarantine for the first 14 days. Then it took two weeks to recover.

However, during this there was a lot of support from our coaching staff and medical team. Everyone said that the first thing is to pay attention to health. After that you need to think about training. If you do not get healthy soon, then there will be trouble ahead, so it was asked to pay attention to food and drink. With everyone’s cooperation, the players were able to recover quickly and training could start again.

  • What did you focus on while looking at the Olympics?

Today’s game is fast. In such a situation, fitness becomes very important for competition with other teams. Also, fitness was very important for most of the players when they came recovering from Corona. Keeping all these in mind, the coaching team focused more on fitness. At the same time, worked on the penalty corner, how to make maximum penalty corners. Also focused on controlling the game, so that the ball remains with us for as long as possible.

  • The women’s team went on a foreign tour at the beginning of the year, how important was it for the Olympics?

In January we went on tour to Argentina and Germany. We played matches with top teams a few months before the Olympics, which will definitely benefit us. In these matches, we saw that the team was creating a lot of chances, but we were not able to convert it into goals. In such a situation, after coming from there, we worked on it, so that we can convert the opportunity given to the goal.

  • What is the team’s training plan before the Olympics?

Due to the second wave of corona in India, many countries have banned travel. In such a situation, our national camp was set up in Bangalore itself. This is where we are training. If permission is given to go to any country for training a few days before the Olympics, then the team administration will prepare its plan.
