Railways has incurred a loss of Rs 150 crore in the financial year 2020-21 due to non-selling of platform tickets. Its earnings have been only Rs 10 crore in this financial year. In the financial year 2019-20, the railways earned Rs 160 crore from platform tickets.

Railway has given information under RTI

Railway has given information under Right to Information (RTI). It has said that it has lost 94% of its revenue due to discontinuation of platform ticket sales. Due to Corona, the platform ticket was first priced at Rs 50 to stop people at the railway station, then it was closed. Railways said that it has earned only Rs 10 crore from platform tickets in 2020-21.

160 crore earnings in 2019-20

In the financial year 2019-20, the railways earned Rs 160.87 crore from platform tickets. This earning was the highest in this segment in the last 5 years. Railways had taken this step after the national lockdown in March last year and this step is still going on. Still, only those who have tickets at the station are getting entry.

decision in different zones

This decision was taken in different zones of the railway and in some zones the ticket prices were increased and in some zones the entry has been completely banned. The platform ticket was earlier priced from Rs 10 to 30, yet the crowd did not stop, then it was raised to Rs 50. However, the Railways says that the ticket prices have been increased only for a short time. Later it will be done as before.

139 crore in 2018-19

The railways earned Rs 139 crore from platform tickets in 2018-19, whereas it usually stays at Rs 131 crore annually. In 2019-20 it went up to 160 crores. The northern zone of the railway is the largest of all its zones. On Saturday, it said that it has again started the facility of issuing platform tickets at all the 8 major stations of Delhi Division. However, the ticket price will be Rs 30.

The 8 stations where platform tickets will be available include New Delhi, Delhi Junction, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar, Meerut City, Ghaziabad, Delhi Sarai Rohilla and Delhi Cantt railway stations.
