Are you the founder of Nirma Group? Karsan Bhai Patel know who Karsanbhai Patel’s business acumen and success story, included in the Forbes list of India’s 100 richest people, is no less interesting than that of Dhirubhai Ambani, father of Mukesh Ambani, who is at the top of this list.
Karsan Bhai Patel is a living example of the spirit of entrepreneurship created in the land of Gujarat. Karsan Bhai, who used to sell detergent powder door-to-door on a cycle in the streets of Ahmedabad, set up the Nirma Group on his own.
The example of his quickness in the beginning of the business is that when the price of washing powder of established brands like Hindustan Lever was up to Rs 13 per kg… Karsan Bhai started selling Nirma brand washing powder at just Rs 3 per kg.
Today Nirma Group is not only in the field of detergent powder/soap, beauty soap, cosmetic, but also has an education institute (Nirma University) and Karsan Bhai is one of the richest men in the country.
Today we will see Nirma Group’s rags to riches Lessons for us from this story along with the story.
4 big lessons from Nirma’s story
1) Security of a government job is not everything
Karsan Bhai Patel did a job in the beginning of his career, but even while working, the entrepreneur inside him did not remain calm.
Karsanbhai Patel was born in a farming family in Rooppur, Patan district of Gujarat. After graduating in Chemistry at the age of 21, Karsanbhai tried to get a regular job like his peers.
Karsanbhai also worked as a lab technician at New Cotton Mills belonging to the Lalbhai Group. After this short stint, he also worked in the Geology and Mining Department of the Government of Gujarat.
Lesson: He gave up the security of a government job to start Nirma, which can be an inspiration to many youngsters running after government jobs today.
2) Use your knowledge to invent
Karsanbhai Patel himself was a chemistry graduate. Even after getting into business, he knew very well the importance of education. This thinking laid the foundation of Nirma Institute of Technology.
Karsanbhai’s career took a turning point in 1969, when the farmer’s son, a chemistry graduate, tried to combine soda ash and some other ingredients.
After many days of trying, finally one day he got the formula of Nirma Detergent Powder. It was then that he started manufacturing detergent as a business after office hours in the 100 square feet backyard of his house. After establishing its low-cost Nirma brand in detergents, Nirma launched a range of products including beauty soap, shampoo, toilet soap, toothpaste, salt.
Lesson: Innovate with the knowledge you are getting, try to find solutions to the problems, the path to success lies there.
3) Getting positivity even from the sadness of the loss of loved ones
The picture of this girl in the logo of Nirma washing powder has been kept in the memory of Karsan Bhai Patel’s daughter Nirupama.
Many of us often break down in the grief of losing our loved ones, many even become drug addicts. There was a moment in the life of Karsanbhai Patel also when he lost his daughter in a car accident. After this his life almost changed but in a positive way. He found a way to bring his daughter back to life.
His daughter’s name was ‘Nirupama’, and very few people know that ‘Nirma’ is a shortened form of the same name. The girl image appearing on the packet of ‘Nirma’ was also kept in the memory of his daughter. Karsan Bhai Patel has brought up Nirma Group like his own ‘daughter’.
Lesson: Take any tragedy of life positively.
4) Work in the field of education and social service
In this picture of 2021, Karsan Bhai Patel is seen with his granddaughter Riya Patel.
In 1995, Karsanbhai Patel gave Nirma a distinct identity when he established the Nirma Institute of Technology in Ahmedabad. Subsequently, in April 2003, under a special act passed by the Gujarat State Legislative Assembly, Nirma University was established by the first three institutions.
Karsanbhai Patel also runs Nirma Foundation, Nirma Memorial Trust and Chansma Rooppur Village Development Trust.
Lesson: Also try to return what you got from the society.
Karsanbhai Patel, who started a detergent powder company from his home, comes in the list of billionaires of the world and India today. Now, Karsanbhai Patel has handed over the business to his two sons, Rakesh Patel and Hirenbhai Patel. Karsan Bhai, who has won many awards, was awarded the Padma Shri in 2010.
