Famous comedian Raju Srivastava merged with Panchtatva on Thursday. He died on Wednesday at the age of 58. He had a heart attack 42 days before his death, after which he was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi. The head of the hospital’s forensic department, Dr. Sudhir Gupta, said that the post-mortem of Raju’s body was done by ‘virtual autopsy’ technique. This procedure is quite different from the normal post-mortem. Let’s know about it…

What is Virtual Autopsy?
Virtual autopsy is also called virtual post mortem or vertopysy. In this, the complete examination of the dead body is done with the help of machine. There is no tearing in this process like a normal post-mortem. Forensic doctors use high tech digital X-ray and MRI machines. It also does not run the risk of hurting religious sentiments and gives a better idea about the cause of death.

Dr. Gupta said that virtual autopsy takes less time to conduct post-mortem, so that the dead body can be sent quickly for last rites. In Raju’s case, the virtual post-mortem was done because he was not conscious when he was initially brought to AIIMS. Whether he fell while running on the treadmill or not, it was not clear. In such a dilemma, the police decides to conduct a post-mortem after the death of the person.

In virtual autopsy, a complete body scan is done without touching the mortal remains.

How does technology work?
Dr. Gupta says that virtual autopsy is a radiological test. In this, those fractures, blood clots and injuries are also detected, which cannot be seen with the eyes. With the help of this procedure, along with bleeding, small fractures like hairline or chip fractures in bones are also easily detected. These can be kept in the form of X-rays, which can later become legal evidence.

When did virtual autopsy started in the country?
Virtual Autopsy in India started in 2020. In the Rajya Sabha in 2019, the then Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan had said – After the death of the person, many family members are hesitant to conduct a normal post-mortem. Virtual autopsy saves both time and money. While the normal post-mortem takes 2.5 hours, the virtual post-mortem is done in 30 minutes.

AIIMS was allotted Rs 5 crore for this project. Every year 3,000 post-mortems are conducted in AIIMS. Depending on the complexity of the case, the process can take up to 3 days. AIIMS Delhi is the only hospital in South-East Asia to conduct virtual autopsy. Countries like America, Australia and Switzerland are already using this technology.
