The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered the Assam (Assam) government to pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to a person who was beaten up by a mob for selling cooked beef in his tea shop in Bishwanath district. The Commission took serious cognizance of the fact that neither the Chief Secretary responded to the show cause notice nor the Director General of Police submitted a report on the action taken against the police officers accused in the case.
The mob beat Shaukat Ali (48) in front of some policemen on April 7 last year for selling beef at a tea shop and was fed pork.
A market contractor was also allegedly beaten up for allowing Ali to open the shop. In a letter written by the Assistant Registrar (Law) of NHRC to the Chief Secretary, it was stated that the Commission orders the Government of Assam to give an amount of one lakh rupees to Shaukat Ali.
