The Union Health Ministry does not have the data of Health Care Staff such as doctors, nurses and Asha workers etc. who are infected with Coronavirus and lose their lives. Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey said in her written statement in Rajya Sabha, 'Health is a state subject. Such data is not maintained by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at the central level. However, the database of those who are seeking relief under the Prime Minister's Poor Welfare Insurance Package is being kept at the national level. Minister of State for Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey answered the question of Rajya Sabha MP Binoy Viswam who asked 'Minister of Health and Family Welfare, how many health care staff like doctors, nurses, support staff, and Asha worker corona got infected and died?' In his reply, the Minister of State for Health said that there are a total of 155 health care staff who died from Corona and their families are demanding relief under the 'Prime Minister's Poor Welfare Insurance Package'. Out of these 155 64 doctors, 32 nursing staff, 14 Asha workers, 45 others are included.
What is the Prime Minister's Poor Welfare Package?
When the lockdown occurred due to Corona in the country, on March 30, the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package Insurance Scheme was launched. This is a central government scheme and the premium of this insurance scheme is given by the central government. Under this scheme, such health care workers (including community health workers) who may have to come in contact with a corona patient and their care and therefore remain at risk of getting infected. They get an insurance cover of 50 lakh rupees. This includes death due to corona infection.
The scheme includes staff of private hospital / retired people / volunteers / urban local bodies / daily wage workers / staff outsourced by central or state hospitals etc. This insurance scheme is above and different from all other insurance plans. The scheme is run by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and New India Assurance.
