Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s government has come into Damage Control mode after the Bihar government, ministers and government officials came out with an order that brought abusive or objectionable social media posts under cybercrime. On Friday, the Bihar Police issued a clarification on its move and advocated constructive criticism. This statement said that the administration “welcomes constructive criticism” and under this order action will be taken only against those who use ‘abusive language’ and spread rumors.
Jitendra Kumar, from Bihar’s Additional Director General Headquarters, said, “Criticism is beneficial for democracy. But criticism should be constructive and language should be within the limits of decorum. This advisory was issued keeping in mind the spread of abusive language, rumors and misinformation used on social media – all these are punishable offenses under the IT Act.
On Thursday, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ordered the Economic Offenses Wing of the State Police to report such posts on social media and action should be taken against those who put them. It is a sign that Nitish Kumar is being influenced by the criticisms being received on the Internet.
