Mirabai Chanu has won India’s first medal in the Tokyo Olympics. He won silver in the 49 kg weight category by lifting a total of 202 kg. In this way, the country has got an Olympic medal in weightlifting after 21 years. Earlier, Karnam Malleswari had won bronze in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Mirabai’s success becomes special in the sense that she could not lift the weight properly in any of her attempts at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Every attempt of his was disqualified.
Before going to the Olympics, Mirabai told NewsBust India that I would definitely win a medal in the Tokyo Olympics. Because I have experience playing in the Olympics. I missed out on winning a medal in my first Olympics. Then due to lack of experience I was not able to win the medal.
Mirabai sets world record
At the Tashkent Asian Weightlifting Championships held in April this year, Mirabai Chanu lifted a world record of 119 kg in the clean and jerk after lifting 86 kg in the snatch. She finished third with a total of 205kg. Earlier the world record in clean and jerk was 118 kg. Chanu’s individual best performance in 49kg was a total of 203kg (88kg and 115kg), which she made at the National Championships in February last year.
Won the first medal in weightlifting at the age of 11
Mirabai hails from Imphal in Manipur. He won his first gold in weightlifting at the age of 11 in a local weightlifting tournament. He started his weightlifting career at the international level with the World and Junior Asian Championships. She considers Kunjarani Devi as her role model.
First Indian to win a medal in World Weightlifting Championship
Mirabai is the first Indian weightlifter to win a medal at the World Weightlifting Championship. He achieved this feat in 2017 (49 kg weight category). He won the silver medal in the 49 kg weight category at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Mirabai won the gold medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Great comeback in 2019 after injury
Mirabai had to deal with back pain in 2018. However, after that she made a comeback from the 2019 Thailand World Championship and finished fourth. Then he lifted the weight of more than 200 kg for the first time. Chanu says that at that time the Government of India got full support. I was sent to America for treatment. After that I not only made a comeback, but also managed to lift the most weight of my career.
