After the death of a person, his Aadhaar card can be de-activated. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UDAI) and the Registrar General of India are working on creating and introducing a mechanism for this. If the process of taking Aadhaar number starts after death, then it cannot be misused.
Many people do not know what to do with the documents like PAN card, Aadhaar card, Voter ID and passport after the death of a person. Today we are telling you what the family members should do with these documents after the person’s death.
Aadhar card
There is no system to cancel the Aadhaar card of a person after his death. In such a situation, it is the responsibility of the family of the deceased to keep the Aadhaar card of the deceased safe and see that it is not misused. The person who has died, if that person was taking advantage of any scheme or subsidy through Aadhaar, then the concerned department should inform about the person’s death. This will remove his name from that scheme.
What to do: One can lock the Aadhaar of the deceased person through Aadhaar app or UIDAI website. This will help in preventing misuse of the Aadhaar number of the deceased person.
PAN card
Permanent Account Number or PAN Card is a very important document in our country. Apart from filling income tax, it is needed in many works like opening bank and demat accounts. It is linked to your account. In such a situation, it is necessary to close the PAN card on the death of a person. Otherwise his PAN card can be misused. It is not mandatory to surrender the PAN of the deceased, i.e. there is no penalty if the PAN of the deceased is not surrendered.
What to do: If you feel that you may need it later for some work, then you can keep it with you. On the other hand, if you feel that there is no need for it and some other person can misuse it, then you can surrender it.
Voter ID Card
Voter ID is also known as a main document in our country. Voter ID is necessary to cast vote. It can be canceled after the death of the person. If it is not canceled if it falls into the wrong hands, then an attempt can be made to cast fake votes in the name of the deceased in the election.
What to do: If someone has died in your family, any member of the family can get it canceled by filling Form No. 7 at the election office. For this, the death certificate of the deceased will be required.
Passport
Unlike Aadhaar card, there is no provision for surrender or cancellation of passport in case of death of the individual. When a passport expires, it becomes invalid by default.
What to do: Keep it carefully, so that it does not fall into any wrong hands, so that no one can misuse it for address proof or any other work.
What to do if documents are lost or stolen?
If these documents are lost or stolen, then you can also complain about it in the nearest police station. This will prevent misuse of documents.
