Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith: A controversy has erupted over disciplinary action against a guest lecturer at Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth in Varanasi for posting on social media why women should not participate in the Hindu festival of Navratri. Guest Lecturer in Political Science Prof. Mithilesh Kumar Gautam found it difficult to make controversial remarks on Hinduism. After getting into the matter, Prof. Mithilesh was dismissed. Along with this, he was also banned from entering the university campus. The university administration has taken this action in view of the displeasure of the students.
In fact, Dr. Mithilesh Gautam wrote in a post on social media, ‘It is better for women to fast than nine days of Navratri to read the Indian Constitution and Hindu Code Bill for nine days, their life will be free from slavery and fear, Jai Bhim .’ Let us inform that as soon as his post went viral, the Vice Chancellor of Banaras University, Prof. Mithilesh was dismissed.
University Registrar Dr. Sunita Pandey told NewsBust that the remarks made by Dr. Gautam were objectionable. He said that no person has any right to make such remarks about any religion or make such remarks about women. Dr. Pandey said, what he said is not correct. A teacher should always refrain from making such remarks. A news agency reported that, despite repeated attempts, Dr. Gautam could not be contacted for his comments. His phone was switched off.
Dr. Pandey said, on September 29, the students had complained through a letter that Dr. Gautam had posted something on social media, which was against Hinduism. Dr. Pandey has cited ‘widespread outrage’ among the students against Dr. Gautam for his action. He said that in view of the prevailing situation, the guest lecturer was advised not to enter the campus for his own safety.
According to university officials, some students had also met the vice-chancellor and requested him to give an opportunity to the guest lecturer to present his case in the matter. These students were assured by the Vice-Chancellor that both the sides would be heard and a committee was formed for this purpose. Anuj Srivastava, the office bearer of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the BJP, said that Dr. Gautam’s remarks was ‘wrong’ and the university took ‘appropriate steps’.
