An iceberg the size of the UK city of London has broken away from an ice shelf in Antarctica. The incident took place near Britain’s Halley Research Station located in Antarctica. According to the report of National Geographic, this process of breaking of iceberg is called caving.
150 m Iceberg separated from thick ice
According to the report, the size of the giant iceberg is 1,550 square kilometers. It broke apart on Sunday after breaking through a 150-metre thick ice shelf. However, this phenomenon is not linked to climate change.
According to the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), scientists had already expected this incident. Actually, the process of caving is very natural. This is what happens when the ice caps get so thick. BAS monitors the condition of the ice shelves in Antarctica.
The incident of breaking of ice in Antarctica, at present there is no harm to humans.
Incident happened for the second time in 2 years
BAS glaciologist Dominic Hodgson said that the caving incident in this part of Antarctica has happened for the second time in the last two years. Earlier in February 2021, the 1,270 square kilometer iceberg broke away from the 150 meter thick ice rock. It was named A74.
BAS says that the new iceberg may be larger than A74, but it will also flow in the same direction that A74 flowed. No name has been given to the new iceberg yet. Soon the US National Ice Center will release its name.
Antarctica’s ice has been breaking for decades
Scientists have been noticing cracks in the frozen ice in Antarctica for decades. Before 2021, the incident of separation of the huge iceberg happened in 1971. BAS has told in a press release that what changes are coming in the ice in Antarctica, it is being monitored. Their analysis is going on with the help of many satellites around the world including the American Space Agency NASA.
