The first 3 months of this year have been the best for IT. During this period, there were not as many recruitments in the 5 core sectors (Health, Transport, Business, Financial Services and Restaurant-Residence) as much as IT/BPO alone. A total of 1.48 lakh employees have increased in these 5 sectors during January-March 2022, while in IT/BPO alone, 3.74 lakh employees have increased. At the same time, during this period, there has been a decrease in the workforce in the education, manufacturing and construction sectors. The maximum 1.44 lakh workers have been reduced in the manufacturing sector, more than 22 thousand in education and about nine thousand in construction.

This picture has come to the fore in the quarterly employment survey released by the Ministry of Labor and Employment on Tuesday. According to this survey, there were 38.31 lakh employees in IT/BPO during January-March 2022, compared to 34.56 lakh during October-December 2021.

According to the quarterly (January-March 2022) employment survey, the share of female employees in the health sector has gone up to 52% i.e. they have overtaken men.

  • Women employees account for 44% in education, 41% in financial services and 36% in IT/BPO.
  • Women accounted for 29.30% of the total workforce in 9 core sectors during the April-June 2021 quarter, rising to 31.77% in the January-March 22 quarter.
  • Companies with more than 500 employees account for the most at around 40%. While about 37% of the companies have less than 100 employees.

Education and transport in top-3 in keeping regular employees

  • The IT/BPO sector has the highest number of regular employees (94.69%). Transport is second (91.89%) and education is third (91.14%) in this list.
  • The construction sector has the largest number of employees (19.04%) working on contract. Manufacturing ranks second (12.38%) and health third (9.08%) in this regard.
  • The maximum number of daily wage or part time workers is 5.69% in construction. Manufacturing is second (3.96%) and the financial services sector is third (3.6%).
  • In all nine sectors, a total of 86.42% employees work on regular basis and 8.66% on contract basis.
