In response, the director of IIT Kharagpur said, “Yes sir, I have two sons.” On this, the court said that the boy’s parents are so poor that they do not have the money to come here and appear in the court. Expressing displeasure over the manner in which the IIT director handled the incident, the court said, “You should have known that children with better abilities come here.” Children from various social and economic backgrounds come to study in IITs. They do not mix easily with students from other backgrounds.
The Calcutta High Court had ordered the director of IIT Kharagpur to attend the hearing of a petition filed by the parents of Faizan Ahmed, a third-year mechanical engineering student. But the director did not appear. The parents of the deceased student have alleged that the death of their son on the campus of the institute is a clear case of murder. Even after complaining to the authorities, he had become a victim of ragging.
To this, the bench asked, “What is more important? Appearing before the High Court or going to Tokyo?” On this the director’s counsel informed the court that he was going there as part of a government delegation.
Earlier, on December 1 last year, the court had reprimanded the director for not taking action on the complaint of ragging. Because the student had died a few days after the complaint. The court today also told the police that ‘we cannot see any leniency in this matter’. It is a humble request of this court. Please do not take any side.
Director of IIT Kharagpur said – there will be no mistake
On this, IIT Kharagpur director Virendra Tiwari said that he considers the children of the institute as his children, and strict action will be taken. He said, “For me all the students are my sons and daughters. The court has ordered strict action and we will conduct a thorough probe. There will be no lapse.”
What did the Calcutta High Court say on ragging?
The court said that if the guidelines on ragging are correct as per the order of the Supreme Court, then a high power committee should be constituted. The Court said that it is expected that strict and preventive measures will be taken by IIT Kharagpur not only in this incident but also to prevent recurrence of the above incidents in future.
Next hearing will be on February 6
The High Court said that the status of the investigation would be considered on February 6. The role of IITs and instructions on them will be considered on 13 February.
What is the whole matter?
The decomposing body of Faizan Ahmed was recovered from a hostel room on October 14 last year. The court had asked for a report from the IIT director and after seeing it, the court said that the director’s report is completely misleading.
