The Information and Broadcasting Ministry told the Supreme Court that if you want to start the process of controlling the media, then first digital media should be done, not mainstream media. The Center argued that the viewer ship of digital media has a large scope and has the power to go viral.
Center said- Digital media reaches people faster
The Center on Thursday filed a court affidavit and said that the mainstream media, whether print or electronic, contain publication and telecast once. On the other hand, digital media reaches more and more massively. The scope of its readership is large and due to apps like WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook, it also has the power to go viral.
The Center had placed this in the affidavit court in the Sudarshan TV case. The Center said that adequate system still exists regarding print and electronic media and the courts have also given instructions. In such a situation, if the court decides to start the process of regulation, it should be started from digital media. Media includes print, electronic, digital print media, digital web news portals, YouTube channels and Over the Top (OTT) platforms.
Why did the center have to present affidavit
On Thursday, the ministry has stayed the broadcasting of Sudarshan TV for the broadcast of UPSC Jihad program by a bench of Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice KM Joseph, Justice Indu Malhotra. This moratorium has been imposed on a petition, in which the court was told that there should be a balance between the freedom of the journalist and responsible journalism.
The court also indicated the formation of a 5-member committee, which would set the standard for electronic media. The court, while staying the stay, said that by looking at the program of the channel, it seems that its purpose is to discredit the Muslim community.
