Because people had decided to do their daily chores like cooking and washing dishes on the basis of the blackout schedule. But, due to the shortage of water, all the work stopped.
Railway employee Thomas Mbasa says, ‘I am taking a bath in the office washroom, but my children cannot do so. He has to go to school without taking a bath. Thomas, 43, is among the desperate people protesting on the streets of Soshanguwe over water supply. During this, the protesters also blocked the road and shouted slogans.
Mabasa said, “Sometimes we wait for the water to come all night so that we can wake up the children from their sleep and take a bath. Even household chores are not being done because of the lack of water.”
Indeed, Africa’s industrial economy has been crippled by record power cuts over the past year. Because the debt-ridden biggest energy firm Eskom’s problems have increased further. This firm used to meet about 90 percent of the country’s electricity supply. But over the years there is a problem in its production. The firm is struggling to maintain the aging coal-fired infrastructure.
Water and Sanitation Ministry spokeswoman Wisne Mwasa said the government was working with water utilities “to improve the situation”. The energy crisis is affecting the water infrastructure. Sarkar said that one problem is that machinery is being restarted due to power cuts and this accelerates breakdown. However, work is being done on this at a fast pace. Hope the problem will be rectified soon.
