Google employees have written an open letter to Sundar Pichai to better handle the layoff.

Nearly 1,400 employees of parent company Alphabet Inc have signed an open letter calling for better treatment during the layoff process after Google announced 12,000 job cuts. . According to Bloomberg, In an open letter addressed to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sundar Pichai, the employees have put forth several demands of the company. These include freezing new hires, requiring voluntary resignations before mandatory ones, prioritizing employees involved in layoffs for new hires, and allowing workers’ paid leave (such as parental and bereavement leave) to run out for a specified period of time. .

The workers have also called on Alphabet not to lay off workers from countries with a humanitarian crisis (especially Ukraine). Along with this, it has sought to provide additional support to employees at risk of losing their jobs as well as visa-linked residency. The letter states, “The ramifications of Alphabet’s decision to reduce its workforce are global. Nowhere have workers’ voices been adequately considered, and we know we are stronger together than alone.” .” In January, Alphabet announced plans to cut around 6% of its workforce following pressure from investors to reduce spending in the wake of the post-pandemic recession. Meta Platforms Inc, Amazon.com Inc and Microsoft Corp are among other tech giants that have cut workforce in recent months.

support of many labor unions
A spokeswoman for Alphabet did not immediately comment on the petition. When Pichai announced the job cuts on January 20, he told employees in an email that the company had hired them considering a “different economic situation than today” and that he takes “full responsibility” for it. Some Google employees, especially in the US, immediately lost their jobs after this. However, in Europe this process has been very slow. The reason for this is that these countries generally have strong labor protection laws. The letter written to Sundar Pichai has the support of many employee unions. Signatories include the Alphabet Workers Union, United Tech and Allied Workers and UNI Global. Labor groups have helped organize many letters regarding layoffs at various units of Google and in the various countries where it is present. Employees plan to circulate the letter for a few more days before delivering the letter to Pichai at Google’s headquarters in California.
