This time there is a possibility of an electoral contest between Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor, although the possibility of some other candidates entering the fray cannot be ruled out. This time more than 9000 delegates (members of the electoral college) will vote when the elections are held. Congress says that it is the only party in the country whose president is elected democratically.

Referring to the importance of this time’s election, party general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “I am in K.K. I am a person who believes in the views of Kamaraj that the election should be by consensus, but if consensus is not reached, then the election becomes necessary. Congress is the only party where elections are held in a democratic and transparent manner.

“At present Gehlot ji has announced that he will contest the elections and Tharoor has indicated that he will contest. In such a situation, there is a possibility that the election will be held on October 17.” .

The pre-independence election of the Congress President in 1939 is remembered in the sense that Pattabhi Sitaramayya, the Mahatma Gandhi-backed candidate, had to face defeat against Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. In this election, Bose got 1,580 votes, while Sitaramayya got 1,377 votes.

However, after independence, the first election for the post of Congress President was held in 1950. There was an election contest between Acharya Kriplani and Purushottam Das Tandon. Tandon emerged victorious in this. Tandon got 1,306 votes while Kripalani got 1,092 votes. Later, Tandon resigned due to differences with the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Then Nehru took over the reins of the party.

He served as party chief and prime minister between 1951 and 1955. Nehru left the post of Congress President in 1955 and UN Dhebar became Congress President.

After 1950, there was no electoral contest for the post of Congress President for 47 years. In 1997, for the first time, a triangular electoral contest was held. Sitaram Kesari, Sharad Pawar and Rajesh Pilot contested the election and Kesari became the winner. Kesari got 6,224 votes, Pawar got 882 and Pilot got 354 votes. Only a year after this election, the Congress Working Committee had passed a resolution and removed Kesari and it was a very discussed and controversial issue.

In independent India, the election for the post of Congress President was held for the third time in the year 2000 when the veteran Brahmin leader of Uttar Pradesh Jitendra Prasad stood in front of Sonia Gandhi. Prasad, who was once the political secretary of Rajiv Gandhi, had to face a crushing defeat in this election and he got only 94 votes. Sonia got the support of 7,400 delegates.

After independence, the party has been commanded by 16 people so far, in which there have been five heads of the Gandhi family. The current President of Congress is Sonia Gandhi and she is the longest-serving woman leader in the history of Congress.

In independent India, members of the Gandhi family have been Congress presidents for nearly four decades. Nehru served as the party chief between 1951 and 1955. Nehru left the post of Congress President in 1955 and UN Dhebar took over the reins of the party. After this Indira Gandhi was the Congress President from 1959, 1966-67, 1978-1984. Later the Congress also split on several occasions, although the major part of the party remained with the Gandhi family. Of. Kamaraj was the president from 1964-67. S Nijalingappa was the Congress President in 1968-69.

After this Jagjivan Ram became the Congress President in 1970-71. Then Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma was the Congress President from 1972-74. Devkant Barua became the Congress President in 1975-77. From 1985 to 1991 after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, her son Rajiv Gandhi was the Congress President. During this, he was also the Prime Minister for five years. Between 1992-96, P.V. Narasimha Rao was the Congress President.
