The accident took place on the intervening night of Friday-Saturday in the district hospital of Bhandara in Maharashtra. A fire at the hospital’s Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) killed 10 newborns. Among them were some children, who were born the day before. Gaurav Rahpade, the hospital’s security guard, told NewsBust India the eyes of the accident.

We were unable to breathe, where did the children come from
Gaurav has been working as a security guard in the hospital for the last 2 years. Being injured, living or dying is part of Gaurav’s work. But what happened late Friday night, Gaurav’s eyes will never be forgotten. Gaurav was on the ground floor of the hospital when he received the news that a fire has occurred in the New Born Care Unit. When Gaurav ran to the unit, there was smoke in the unit. Tried to go in, but could not succeed due to difficulty in not breathing.

The fire had cut off the power and there was only smoke in the entire unit. As soon as Gaurav reached the spot. Smoke broke out the doors and windows, creating a space for the exit. Gaurav told that during this time we were having difficulty in breathing. In such a way, how can those little children be struggling with life?

Children are kept in these small beds, these beds too were meditating like a furnace.

Gaurav told that by breaking the glass he reached the place where the children were kept. The bodies of 7 children were severely heated. There were burn marks on his skin. Gaurav takes out all the children along with his teammates. Those little bodies were so hot, which could be felt with hands. There was no movement in the children’s bodies. With great difficulty, he was shifted to another ward. But what Gaurav’s eyes were going to see after this can never be forgotten.

The faces of innocent people had turned black

Gaurav said, ‘I moved towards 10 children. The faces of 7 of them were severely blackened. The body of 3 children was completely scorched. As soon as the children were wrapped in clothes, the children were removed from there and the bodies of the children were taken to the next of kin. I will never forget this scene in my life. Gaurav’s eyes become moist after remembering that scene. He says that there will always be regret that if there was time to recover first, maybe 10 newborns would have survived.

Fire extinguishers were not working

Due to the problem of emergency entry in the hospital, the fire fighting team climbed from the previous balcony and entered inside.

Gaurav ran towards Fire Extinguisher, but the battle of chaos in those red coaches was such that Fire Extinguisher did not work on this occasion. They kept banging the coaches, pulling their clips but the fire-extinguishing powder did not come out of it. When one or two fire extinguishers went on spraying. By then the fire brigade arrived and took over. Gaurav says that if the fire system of the hospital was working properly then it probably would not have happened.
