Delhi, Varanasi and Bengaluru airports have launched an app ‘DigiAtra’ for facial recognition (FR) of domestic passengers. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Thursday launched ‘Dijiyatra’, a facial recognition-based entry facility for air passengers at the Delhi airport.

With the help of this app, entry of passengers will be done at all the checkpoints on the basis of facial recognition. Airport entry, security check and boarding gate will be done from the app at all the three places. At Delhi airport, it has just been started at T3 terminal for domestic passengers. Earlier in August, Digitra was soft launched as a testing.

Entry to the airport will be through e-gate
The Digiatra app will have verification through Aadhaar and the passenger will also have to take his/her photograph. At the airport’s e-gate, the passenger will first have to scan the bar-coded boarding pass. After this, the ‘facial recognition’ system installed there will verify the identity of the passenger and the travel document. After this process, passengers will be able to enter the airport through e-gate.

Verification through Aadhaar in the DigiTra app will have to be done only once. Thereafter, whenever you travel, you will have to upload your ticket on the app after web check-in. After reaching the airport you will need to place your ticket on the scanner. Where will your face be scanned? After this you will be entered.

What is facial recognition system?
It is a biometric system that identifies a person by the combination of his face, eyes, mouth. In this, all the elements of the face, especially the eyes and mouth, are read. Then for identification, a 3D image of the face is created and saved in the database. This technology was invented by a team of American scientists. This included Woody Bledsoe, Helen Chan Woolf, and Charles Bison.
