Australia registered a 1-0 win in a thrilling encounter against Denmark in the FIFA World Cup 2022 on Wednesday. With this victory, Australia qualified for the pre-quarter-finals i.e. Round of 16. Australia’s midfielder Matthew Leckie was the hero of the victory. He scored the only goal of the match in the 60th minute, which went to Australia’s account.
With the win, Australia shattered their own Group E team Tunisia’s dream of qualifying. Tunisia had to win against France to go ahead and Australia had to play out a draw against Denmark. Tunisia won against France, but Australia defeated Denmark, due to which Tunisia was eliminated in third place.
Denmark captain Christian Eriksen could not control his emotions after being dropped.
Australia took the lead in the second half
Australia took the lead in the second half. Matthew Leckie scored for them in the 60th minute. Leckie took the ball alone past the Danish goalkeeper, dodged defenders and fired the ball into the bottom right corner.
A goal by Matthew Leckie, wearing Australia’s number 7 jersey, ensured the team’s place in the pre-quarter-finals.
Denmark failed to finish
The Danish team kept their composure throughout the match, but could not convert shots on goal. Denmark took a total of 12 shots in the match, out of which only 3 went on target. At the same time, Australia took 8 shots, out of which 4 were on target. Denmark tried to attack throughout the match but could not score.

The first half saw a tough fight between Australia and Denmark. Both the teams performed well. While Australia had 4 shots on goal, Denmark had 5. Denmark won in ball possession. Denmark kept 66 percent of the ball with them and also took 2 corners.
