Classical musician Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan died at his home on Sunday afternoon. Mustafa Khan was 89 years old. Khan’s daughter-in-law Namrata Gupta Khan said that he died at 12:37 pm at his residence in Bandra. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over Khan’s death and said that the cultural world had suffered a great loss due to his death. Khan was an artist honored with Padma Vibhushan.
According to Namrata, “He was fine this morning. We had a 24-hour nurse at home to look after them. She vomited during the massage and when she arrived, her eyes were closed. He was breathing slowly. I tried to contact the doctors and by the time they came, he had breathed his last. “The family is shocked by Khan’s sudden demise as he looked better. The musician was to be 90 years old on March 3. Khan had a brain stroke in 2019 and the left side of his body was paralyzed.

Namrata shared the news of Khan’s death on his Facebook page. Namrata posted on the social media platform, “With a heavy heart, I inform you all that my father-in-law and our family columnist Padma Vibhushan Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Sahab said goodbye to this world a few minutes ago.” Ghulam Mustafa Khan was born on 3 March 1931 in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh. He was the eldest son in a family of four brothers and three sisters. His father, Ustad Waris Hussain Khan, was the son of renowned musician Ustad Murred Bakhsh. While his mother Sabri Begum was the daughter of Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan, who is credited as the founder of the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana of music. He was awarded Padma Shri in 1991, Padma Bhushan in 2006 and Padma Vibhushan in 2018. In the year 2003, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

He was a leading figure in the music field, a stalwart of creativity whose creations took him over generations. Great singer Lata Mangeshkar and music composer AR Rahman mourned the death of Khan and paid tribute to him.
