What the people of China thought for years as a green valley, it actually turned out to be a giant sinkhole. It has been discovered in Xuanin County of Hubei Province of the country. Surprisingly, there is also a huge forest in this 630 feet deep pit, which scientists are now exploring.

3 big caves to enter the pit

This crater has been discovered by scientists from the Institute of Karst Geology of the China Geological Survey. He says that the length of the pit is 1,004 feet and the width is 492 feet. It has 3 big caves to enter. Also the trees present here are about 131 feet tall.

George Veni, executive director of the US National Cave and Karst Research Institute, says this is a wonderful discovery. This type of nature is commonly seen in South China. The landscape here tends to be of large pits and undiscovered caves.

Large pits are formed from acidic water

According to Veni, the rain water here is mildly acidic and mixes with carbon dioxide to become more acidic. This water causes cracks in the rocks, forming tunnels. Due to the large size of some caves, their roof collapses and sinkholes are formed. Veni was not involved in this research.

Veni says that 25% of America’s area is filled with similar geographical conditions. Although these craters are formed due to volcano or wind. At the same time, 20% of the world’s land area is made up of cave-rich landscape.

These pits are divine for the people of China

The area where the crater was discovered is named Guangxi Autonomous Region. Karst formation is more visible here, due to which UNESCO has also given it the honor of a World Heritage Site. Zhang Yuanhai, senior engineer of the Institute of Karst Geology, says that the people of China consider these pits to be divine. The reason for this is the folk tales associated with the pits. At present, scientists are preparing to do research by going to the forest located in this pit.
