Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying calling ‘tribals’ as ‘vanvasis’ is derogatory and those who use the term show their ignorance.
He was speaking at a program here. Without naming anyone, the former Union minister said, “Some people like to call Adivasis as ‘Vanvasi’, like those living in forests. It will not be an exaggeration if I say that it is an insult to call tribals forest dwellers. They are tribals.”

He said, “They are the real owners of water, forest and land. People who use such words (Vanvasi) show their ignorance towards the tribals as well as their ignorance towards the conservation efforts of the forests in this country. The credit for this (preserving the forests) goes to them (tribals).
Pawar-led organization ‘Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan’ launched its tribal welfare center on Sunday. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying they are using the “derogatory” word ‘vanvasi’ for tribals. In November last year, during a rally in Madhya Pradesh, Gandhi had said that the BJP should apologize with folded hands for insulting tribals by calling them ‘vanvasis’.
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh supports an organization named ‘Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram’ which works for the welfare of tribals.
