Not getting enough sleep at night, sleeping during the day and snoring have a bad effect on the eyes. Having this problem for a long time increases the risk of developing glaucoma. Due to not getting timely treatment, the risk of blindness also increases.
Glaucoma can happen to anyone
After loss of vision due to glaucoma, it does not return again. Researchers have told that in the event of not getting enough sleep, it can happen to people of any age. This is a common problem in the elderly (especially men), smokers. The research, published in the journal BMJ Open, assessed data from more than 400,000 people who took part in a UK Biobank study.
Glaucoma risk from insomnia
People in the age group of 40 to 69 were included in this study. Information about their sleep habits was collected from the people involved in the study. During the study, which ran from 2010 to 2021, 8,690 cases of glaucoma were identified. Based on the data, researchers found that snoring and daytime sleepiness increased the risk of glaucoma by 11% compared to people with healthy sleep patterns.
At the same time, this risk was increased to 13% in those with insomnia and short or long sleep. Lack of good sleep also has a negative impact on decision making, temperament, learning ability and memory. According to researchers, by 2040, 112 million people worldwide may be affected by glaucoma.
effects on the nerve connecting the eye to the brain
