The Brazilian government has suspended the Covaccine deal with the Indian vaccine maker Bharat Biotech. There was a deal of 2 crore doses between the two. The Brazilian government announced the suspension of the deal after allegations of irregularities in the deal.

2 crore vaccine deal canceled
According to the news agency Reuters, Brazil’s Health Minister Marcelo Carroga on June 29 announced the suspension of the 20 million dose covaccine contract. The deal has become a headache for Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro due to allegations of irregularities.

Advance payment for vaccine not received from Brazil
Bharat Biotech has also said that it has not yet received advance payment for the vaccine from Brazil. The Hyderabad-based pharma company has followed the same rules in Brazil as for the successful supply of Covaccine to other countries of the world in terms of agreements, regulatory approvals and supplies.

Brazil’s Health Ministry said that according to preliminary analysis by the Office of the Comptroller of the Union (CGU), there was no irregularity in the contract. But for compliance, the Health Ministry has opted to suspend the contract in view of more analysis.

Cancellation of deal will not weaken the pace of vaccination
The ministry said the move would not affect the pace of vaccination in Brazil and follows the importance of public administrative regulations. The Brazilian Health Ministry statement said that the deal with Bharat Biotech for the vaccine will be investigated.
