Indian Army’s highest officer General Bipin Rawat’s helicopter crashed in the jungles of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. The last month of the year in General Rawat’s life i.e. not only because of this incident is important, but from his becoming an officer in the army to the accident, every major occasion has a ‘December connection’.
Was made officer in the army on 16 December
General Bipin Rawat, a resident of Uttarakhand, was born on March 16, 1958. After graduating from the National Defense Academy (NDA), he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the army. He was commissioned into the Army on 16 December 1978 in the 5th Battalion of the Army’s 11 Gorkha Rifles. In the same unit, his father was also commissioned in the army. This was the first time that the last month of the year had become a part of his important achievements.
PM Narendra Modi has expressed grief by tweeting this photo after the death of General Bipin Rawat.
Became a lieutenant on December 16 and became a major on the same day
After this, on 16 December 1980, General Bipin Rawat was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in the Indian Army. After 9 years, once again the month of December was lucky and he was promoted from Captain to Major on December 16, 1989.
Got promotion in Commander’s grade in December itself
General Rawat was promoted to the rank of Army Commander after his stupendous achievements in his career. This promotion was also announced in 2015 in the month of December itself. However, he started working as GOC of Southern Command with effect from January 1, 2016 in his first posting in the Commander’s Grade.
Many important campaigns have been a part of General Bipin Rawat’s career.
Appointed Vice Chief in September and Chief of Army Staff in December
General Rawat’s tenure as GOC of Southern Command lasted only 8 months and on September 1, 2016, he was promoted to the rank of Vice Chief of Army Staff (Vice Chief of Army Staff).
But only two months later, when the month of December came, this last month of the year was again lucky for General Rawat and on December 17, 2016, he was promoted to the post of Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. However, he took over this responsibility from January 1, 2017 when General Dalbir Singh retired on December 31.
The country’s first CDS was also made in December itself.
General Rawat also got a chance to become the Chief of Defense Staff as the country’s first CDS i.e. Chief of the three services. On December 30, 2019, the Government of India announced the posting of General Rawat on this highest military appointment of the country, i.e. from his army chief’s post.
Just a day before retirement. He started working as CDS on December 31, immediately after his retirement from the post of Army Chief.
This helicopter accident has snatched CDS General Bipin Rawat from the country.
Now the last moment of life is also in the month of December
Among the important achievements of General Rawat, the most unfortunate moment also came in the month of December itself. On Wednesday, 8 December, General Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat were killed along with 12 army officers in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu.
