Rashida Bi has lost seven members of her family in this accident. In a conversation with NewsBust at his Bhopal home, he said that his health was constantly affected due to the gas leak. He said, “Health problems are continuing, my brother was admitted to the hospital today. The court’s decision is unjust.”
He alleged that the Bhopal victims were denied their day in court by the bench because of “pro-corporate bias”. “Adequate time was given to the counsel for Union Carbide to speak, but the counsel for the victims’ organizations was heard only for 45 minutes,” he added.
The Center had sought an additional compensation of Rs 7,844 crore from the successor firms of Union Carbide. In 1989, compensation of Rs 715 crore was returned. The Center had argued that the scale of damage to human lives and environment could not be properly assessed at the time of disposal.
However, the court said that the Center has not given any reason to raise this issue yet. Senior advocate Harish Salve, representing the successor firms of Union Carbide, told the court that the depreciation of the rupee since 1989 cannot be the basis for seeking a “top-up” of compensation.
The princess who survived the accident said, ‘There was a betrayal in 1989. This is again a hoax.
Regarding the demands of the survivors, Balkrishna Namdeo, president of an organization, questioned that when people affected by the gas leak disaster are continuously dying and suffering, how can the court cover up the matter.
He said, “When the culprit remains absconding and the victims, including their children, continue to suffer, how can the Supreme Court bench cover up the injustice being done in Bhopal?”
Warren Anderson, then president of Union Carbide, was the main accused in the case, but did not appear for the trial. A Bhopal court had declared him a fugitive in 1992. Two non-bailable warrants were issued before his death in 2014. And on June 7, 2010, a Bhopal court sentenced seven officials of Union Carbide India Limited to two years in prison.
