The company says that the prices at which the Center is buying the vaccine from us, our investment is not being compensated.
Bharat Biotech has issued a big statement on Tuesday regarding the price of Covaxin. The company said that we are giving a dose of Covaxin to the government for Rs 150 and this cannot be done for a long time. The vaccine manufacturer has said that the separate price of the vaccine in the private market is to compensate for the cost of making it.
Bharat Biotech’s 6 arguments on prices
Despite the different prices, we feel that the average cost of a single dose of Covaxin is coming to Rs.250. Whatever vaccine we are making, a major part of it will go to the Centre. The central government is buying a dose from us for Rs 150. 25% will go to the private market.
The central government has directed that 10% of our production so far will go to private hospitals. Most of the remaining vaccine will go to the central and state governments. In these circumstances, the average price of a vaccine supplied is Rs 250. will be a little less than
So far, we have invested more than 500 crores on our behalf in the production, development, clinical trials and manufacturing setup of the vaccine. In such a situation, the prices at which the Center is buying the vaccine from us, our investment is not being compensated.
150 Rs. The price is not competitive from the point of view and it will not last long. In such a situation, we have to keep higher prices in the private market so that the cost can be compensated.
There are such examples also. For example, a dose of Human Papilloma Virus vaccine is given to Gavi Alliance for Rs 329, but in the private market its price is Rs 3500. Rotavirus is given to the government for 60 rupees, but in the private market its price is 1700 rupees. The international prices of corona vaccine range from Rs 730 to Rs 2700.
Whether private hospitals want to take the vaccine or not, it also depends on their desire. Yes, it provides the facility of vaccination to those citizens who want to get more convenience by paying higher prices. We believe that the policy of fixing the price of the product is inconsistent with the interests of all concerned, that too when this vaccine is being made available free of cost to every citizen.
In terms of efficiency, Covaxin is believed to be better than Covishield.
Center orders 19 crore doses of Covaxin After the announcement of providing free vaccine to the states, the Health Ministry had issued an order for 44 crore vaccines. This includes 25 crore Coveshield and 19 crore Covaxin. The government has also released 30% of the order amount to the companies in advance.
