‘Do not walk so much by not emphasizing on the strength of others,

If you have strength, then you walk on the strength of your strength.

– Bahadur Shah Zafar (Last Mughal Emperor)

Welcome to Career Fund!

A war that changed India’s destiny

On 23 June 1761, at a place called Palashi (Plassy) on the banks of the Bhagirathi river, 22 miles south of Murshidabad in Bengal, in a battle between the British forces led by Nawab Siraj-ud-daula of Bengal and Robert Clive, ‘Mir Jafar’ (who was the son of Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah). was the commander) with the help of the British became the Nawab of Bengal but only ‘nominally’. Now the real British rule had arrived in Bengal.

This war put the British in India as a king for the first time, when the whole of Bengal came into their hands (including today’s Bangladesh).

This painting by painter Francis Heyman was made after the Battle of Plassey of 1757, in which Robert Clive, Mir Jafar Ali Khan and his son Mir Miran are seen communicating before the end of the Plassey war.

5 big professional lessons from the Battle of Plassey

We get to learn a lot from this war even in modern life. Be it a professional, an entrepreneur or a student, read and understand.

1) If there is no question of morality, then every step seems justified: Nawab Siraj-ud-daula had many enemies, and among them were the wealthy people of Murshidabad such as Rai Rare, Amirchand such as Jagatseth. These people also met the British due to their petty interests. It was with his great financial help that Clive was able to win the Battle of Plassey, one of the wars that changed the history of India. Clive bought Mir Jafar with the money he got (and he didn’t fight at all). So the personal greed of some changed the fate of the country and pushed India into almost 200 years of inhuman rule. Lesson – Watch out for greedy and cruel people, and don’t be deceived.

2) Small army can defeat an army 5 times bigger than itself: The Battle of Plassey is proof that if the battle is fought on the strength of skill, ability and ‘Saam, Daam, Dand, Bhed’, then even a small army can defeat a large army. In the Battle of Plassey, the British commander Clive had an army of only 8000 (and he was also terrified) in front of the Nawab’s army of about fifty thousand men. First of all, Clive, taking stock of his lack of capacity, lured Mir Jafar, the Nawab’s general, to join him. Then by the day of the battle (June 23, 1757) the monsoon had begun. In the heavy rain of the afternoon, all the ammunition of the Nawab got wet. But the British covered their gunpowder with tarpaulins. had done There was no loss in his fire-power, and the bet was reversed. Lesson: Not having an emergency plan in big battles is like planning for failure.

3) Eye on Enemies: No matter how powerful you are, keep an eye on the enemies and don’t think of them as weak at all. Bengal was the most important place in India for the British East India Company because of its commercial importance. From the time of Murshidkuli Khan, the founder of Bengal, the Company had the privilege of doing business in Bengal. When the latter rulers Alivardi Khan and Siraj-ud-daula took away these privileges on public complaints, the company turned against Nawab Siraj. Those who conspired against Siraj-ud-Daulah, sometimes fleeing with his treasure, many of them were given shelter at Fort WilliamSo the Nawab attacked Calcutta in 1756. The British had to flee Fort William and sent a message to Madras that ‘they were driven out of Calcutta and quickly send troops from Madras’.

If Siraj-ud-Daulah wanted at that time, he could have gained an edge by killing the fleeing British. But after the victory at Fort William, they could not understand how far the British could reach! They could bring in equipment and troops from anywhere in the world with a huge navy, block any port. The Nawab Siraj-ud-daula returned to his capital after driving away the British from Fort William in Calcutta, while the Company’s foot soldiers led by Colonel Robert Clive marched towards Calcutta through the then Madras land route. Lesson: Fight the fight full, not half-heartedly.

4) Control of money is strategic: Before 1761, the company used gold and silver brought with it from Britain to trade silk, cotton, spices, indigo etc. from India. But after Mir Jafar ascended the throne of the Nawab of Bengal, the British got the rights to collect ‘land revenue’ from Bengal, Now the company would buy and sell in India with this money. That is, the money of the country was circulated in the country itself and the goods were sent out of the country for free in a way i.e. England. Lesson: In whose hands the command of money, every incident of his is a decree.

5) Whatever you do, do it on your own: The new Nawab, Mir Jafar and after that Mir Qasim could not resist the will of the British even if he wanted to because he did not really have the strength and he sat on the throne on the strength of the British army. So the words of the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar may be reiterated: ‘Do not walk so much by not relying on the strength of others, if you have strength, then you walk on the strength of your strength’.
