Indian paddler Manika Batra has created history. 27-year-old Manika has won the bronze medal in the Asian Table Tennis Championship. She has become the first female Indian player to win a medal in this tournament.
After losing the semi-final match of the championship on Saturday morning, Manika came back strongly in the bronze medal match and won the country the medal.
Manika defeated World No. 6 and three-time Asian Cup champion Hina Hayat 4-2 in the match played in Bangkok.
Earlier, she had lost to fourth seed Japanese player Mima Ito 8-11 11-7 7-11 6-11 11-8 7-11 (2-4) in the semi-finals.
Su-Yu of Chinese Taipei was defeated 4-3 in the quarterfinals.
The Indian star had made it to the semi-finals a day earlier on Friday, beating Chinese Taipei’s Chen Su-Yu 4-3 in the quarter-finals. She became the first Indian player to reach the top-4 in the tournament.
Showed the way out to world number-7
World number-44 Manika Batra caused many upsets in the women’s singles. He showed the way out to world number-7 Chinese player Chen Jingtong in the initial round.
Manika Batra has won a medal for the country in the Commonwealth Games.
