Animal lovers are angry with Maharashtra MLA Bachchu Kadu’s statement on stray dogs.
To control the increasing number of stray dogs in Maharashtra, MLA Omprakash Babarao Kadu alias Bachchu has given advice. He has said that stray dogs should be sent to Assam. The people there eat dogs. Now this experiment should be done in one city. If successful, it should be implemented in the entire state. Kadu Prahar is the chief of Janshakti Party. He is MLA from Achalpur.
Kadu made this statement during the discussion on the calling attention motion in the Assembly. He was speaking during a discussion on the issue raised by MLAs Pratap Sarnaik and Atul Bhatkhalkar regarding problems caused by stray dogs. Now expressing displeasure on his statement, dog lovers have termed it as irresponsible.

After the rebellion of Eknath Shinde in Shiv Sena, Bachchu Kadu also went to Guwahati, the capital of Assam. He said that dogs have value in Assam. Dogs are sold there for eight to nine thousand rupees. When we went to Guwahati, we came to know that the way goat meat is eaten in our country, similarly dog meat is eaten in Assam. In such a situation, there is a need to call the traders there and plan a solution for this. One day the problem of stray dogs will be solved. For this, there will be a need to hold talks with the Government of Assam.
Animal lover said – the statement is derogatory
Animal rights activists and animal lovers have strongly objected to this statement of MLA Kadu. He says that this statement of the MLA is inhuman and derogatory.

A girl’s video made on 12 February went viral. In this, a Nagaland girl who reached Haryana’s Surajkund fair said very angrily, ‘People come to our stall, they don’t talk about the stall or the state, ask if you eat snake and dog meat. what kind of question is that.’ On this, Nagaland minister Temjen Imna Along, who has been in headlines for making funny statements, wrote on his social media page, ‘Some people have started considering us as relatives of Bear Grylls. They are not right. If you want to ask then ask Google. If you don’t get it, then ask me.
of Assam Frogs, eels, birds, rats are all available in the market.
Containers filled with live eels are kept at the Dimapur meat market in Assam. Frogs are kept in plastic bags. Rats are imprisoned in cages and live insects are sold like piles of onions. Dogs tied in sacks have a thin rope tied around their mouths so that they do not make noise.
According to Bindag La, this market of Dinapur started in 2005. It has been renovated a few months ago.
Only 50 rupees fee, then exemption to set up dog meat shop
To set up a shop in the market, one has to pay Rs 50 a day. In this, 40 rupees go to the authority office and 10 rupees to the municipal corporation. Anyone can set up a shop by paying this money, whether it sells dog meat or vegetables.
Patients and pregnant women eat dog meat
Dog meat has been banned once. This caused a lot of problems. After the ban, we had stopped selling it for a few days. Then we started talking and now sales have started again. Not everyone here eats dog meat. It contains a lot of protein, so pregnant women, cancer patients, people undergoing treatment or undergoing surgery eat it. There is a lot of power in its soup.
Meat of banned animals is also being sold
Apart from dog, frog, buffalo and deer meat is also sold in Dinapur market. Deer hunting is also banned. We also saw buffalo leather being sold here. Slaughter of dogs for meat is not allowed in India under the Food Security and Standards Act 2006. Despite this, dog meat is being sold here.
Demand to ban dog meat started in 2016
Eating dog meat is an old tradition in Nagaland, but it came into limelight only in the year 2016. Then a legal notice was sent to the state government to ban the sale of dog meat.
After this, tourists, journalists and social activists started coming to Dimapur Super Market to show cruelty to animals. Many animal welfare activists stood up against the sale of dog meat in Nagaland and the matter reached the High Court and the Supreme Court.
Rats are also being sold in the meat market of Dimapur. They are kept in small cages.
Eating dog meat is banned in the country
FIAPO (Federation of Indian Animals Protection Organization) and Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) are trying to stop the sale of dogs for meat in Nagaland. Varnika Singh, legal manager of FIAPO, says, “We have been trying to stop this since 2016. Our organization was continuously writing letters to the state and central government. According to a notification by FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), eating dog meat is prohibited.
She says that keeping dog meat in the open can cause many diseases. In our investigation, it was found that dog smuggling also happens from one state to another. The way they are brought up is also cruel. They are brought to the market with their mouths closed, tied in a rope and hanged on a bike. Many times people have been caught smuggling dogs at the border. In 2020, the government had issued a notification to ban it. Despite this it is being sold in the market.
Some cases of seizures of dogs in Assam
The law is weak, that’s why the sale of dog meat does not stop
Varnika Singh, a lawyer by profession, told that under Section-11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, it has been told that what kind of treatment with animals comes in cruelty. She says that ‘the punishment given for cruelty to dogs is very less. If caught selling meat and dog openly, the fine is only Rs 10 for the first time and Rs 50 for the second time in three years.
Dog meat sellers take advantage of this law. By selling a dog for meat, the shopkeeper gets 3,500 to 4,000 thousand rupees. Unless the laws are strict, this cannot be stopped.
Nagaland government had banned in 2020
Before July 2020, there was no ban on the sale of dog meat in Nagaland. On July 2, 2020, the state government had decided to close the dog market in the state along with banning the sale of dog meat. Its import and trade was also banned. In March 2020 itself, in Mizoram, the law related to the removal of dogs from the definition of animals suitable for slaughtering animals was amended.
High court’s stay on government’s decision for three years
In July 2020, the meat sellers of Dimapur had moved the Kohima bench of the Gauhati High Court against this decision of the government. In his petition, he said that his business has been affected by this decision. Hearing the petition, Justice S. Hukato Swu had put a stay on the state government’s ban decision till the next hearing. Despite being more than 3 years, this petition is pending for hearing in the court.
old tradition of eating dog meat
There are 15 tribes in Dimapur and there is an old tradition of eating dog meat. We eat dog meat in the same way people eat mutton and chicken in other parts of the country. Before 2020, we used to eat dog meat once a week, now we can’t do that. Due to the ban, it is being sold very expensive. According to Suro Semo, most of the dogs in Dimapur market are brought from Assam.
